Chapter Eleven: Into the Dark
"Why do you think it's the slavers?" I asked.
"Because the description he gave sounded like a mixture of humans, orcs, and goblins, and that fits," Elaria responded.
That did fit, and for the first time since I saw where the Black Gate was, I was glad it was up a sixty-foot vertical cliff. That should slow them down considerably if they tried to follow us up here.
"Do we really need to rush?" I asked. "They have a sixty-foot cliff they'd have to climb to get to us."
Elaria looked at me like I was an idiot and said, "Not everyone is as poor at climbing as you are. I'm certain they probably have some very capable climbers among their numbers."
"Well, then I guess let's rush headlong into the dark," I said gesturing for Elaria to lead us.
She actually hesitated before pulling out an unlit torch to hold the end up to me. I lit it. Yes, Ryland had come far. He was now an integral part of the group. Legends will one day be told of this glorified lighter and fire-starter. I smirked at my own stupid joke.
Elaria took this the wrong way, because she scowled and said, "I could have lit that myself, but you're right here and convenient."
"Gotta admit, that's a nifty trick," Rondo said.
"It's about the only trick I've got," I replied.
"Well, it's something," Rondo said walking up next to Elaria. "I'll walk with you. I don't reckon a lady should be up front alone in the dark."
Elaria scowled at Rondo but didn't dismiss him. She simply turned and began walking. Rondo fell in beside her, and the remaining three of us followed behind. Soon the light from the outside faded, and the flickering light from Elaria's torch was the only source of light.
As we went further back into the cave, it narrowed from the large opening at the cliff face to a much narrower tunnel. Kurnoc fell in behind Tits and me when it became clear it was only wide enough for two people at once. The strangest thing was that the tunnel was sloping upwards instead of heading down as I expected.
"Is this right?" I called up to Elaria, "shouldn't we be heading down?"
"It's the only way to go right now, so it must be right," she responded.
"That's reassuring," I muttered too quietly for her to hear.
I relaxed a bit, five minutes later when we reached what I would call the zenith, and the cave finally began sloping downwards, opening up into a large cavern filled with stalactites and stalagmites. I could never remember which are which.
In the middle of this cavern, large stone steps had been carved right out of the rock, and as they were still the only direction to go, Elaria began leading us down this staircase. It was actually quite impressive if I thought about it, to make something like this staircase without any of the tools used in the modern world. Then again, I had to remember that whoever made this likely had magic, and it was a video game created on a computer.
